Perth was founded on 12 August 1829 at the Swan River near its confluence with the Indian Ocean by Captain James Stirling, but the official founding of the city of Perth was in 1856. The city was named at the request of the British War and Colonial Secretary, Sir George Murray, according to his hometown - the Scottish Perth.

The use of public transport is free in the city center of Perth.
