Garie Beach is a beach located in the Royal National Park, on the outskirts of...   Read moreGarie Beach is a beach located in the Royal National Park, on the outskirts of southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. There are two theories of the origins of the name. Garie is an Aboriginal word meaning 'sleepy'. The name could also be a deviation of the name of a bushranger called Geaty, who camped here.Garie Beach is accessible via Garie Road, and has a carpark. It has no barbecue but has toilets, a surf safety centre, a kiosk and a picnic area. A youth hostel is also located close to Garie Beach. The construction of the Garie Beach Surf Safety Centre is one component of a larger planning and construction program to improve the Garie Beach Valley for the enjoyment of beach users. Stage one of the program was completed in June 2005 and included constructing a 175-space car park, and restoring the creek line and the beach foredune.Stage two involved designing, developing and constructing the Garie Beach Surf Safety Centre, landscaped forecourt and picnic areas. The surf safety centre, once completed, will contain public showers and toilets, a first aid room, kiosk, boat and equipment storage, a radio room, and meeting rooms and office space for the Garie Surf Life Saving Club and Garie Boardriders Club. As there is no electricity, no sewerage system and no mains water in the Garie Valley, the surf safety centre will be solar powered, and include a low-flush hybrid treatment system to provide flushing toilets which will use on-site biological treatment. Rainwater storage tanks will hold 31,600 litres of rainwater to provide showers for beach users.
Garie Beach has some of the best surfing waves in Sydney and is a very popular family beach destination. The Garie Surf Life Saving Club will provide an essential community service in helping to keep the public safe at the beach. Garie is home to the Garie Boardriders Club. Garie Boardriders has an active membership of just over 100 member on average and has been continually running as a boardriders club since 1978. The club's books now have over 500 members on them and a lot of older members are returning to compete in the senior and masters divisions. Collapse

Built as a monument to the long reigning monarch, construction took place in dire times, as Sydney was in a severe recession. The elaborate Romanesque architecture was specially planned for the grand building so the Government could employ many out-of-work craftsmen - stonemasons, plasterers, and stained window artists - in a worthwhile project. Designed as a shopping centre, it was later used for a variety of other purposes until its restoration and return to its original use in the late twentieth century.
The QVB fills an entire city block bound by George, Market, York and Druitt Streets. The dominant feature is the mighty centre dome, consisting of an inner glass dome and an exterior copper- sheathed dome. Glorious stained glass windows and splendid architecture endure throughout the building and an original 19th century staircase sits alongside the dome. Every detail has been faithfully restored, including arches, pillars, balustrades and the intricate tiled floors thus maintaining the integrity of the building. Collapse

It's facing Sydney harbour so there is no surf with calm waters. The beach has sand largely made up of shell grit (largely missing from the beaches on either side), and a small tidal swimming pool.
The water stays shallow for some distance, then there is a huge dropoff, forming a wall. Many large schools of fish can be found at this wall. Especially look down a few metres under ledges. The shallow areas of Fairlight have nice fish too. Collapse

The Gardens cover 30 hectares and everywhere you go, you will see reminders of the city’s beginnings.
Eyes wide open and you may see an Orchard butterfly as big as your hand, a jewel-like Superb Fairy Wren that will fit in your hand, a colony of Pearl White Butterflies blown off course from the tropics and now safe in the Gardens, or a Titan Arum fl ower two metres high.
Now try conjuring up the ghosts of a colonial era of mayhem, murder and mutiny, courage, foresight and vision; tread in the footsteps of a Governor’s lady to her tranquil place overlooking the harbour. Envisage the first farm planted here in 1788 with corn; twirl around and see the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, the deep blue Harbour, and the skyline of the business district.
The National Herbarium of NSW - centre for plant conservation & research - is located within the Royal Botanic Gardens. Collapse

For many it's enough just to find a lookout and gaze across the park's chiselled sandstone outcrops and hazy blue forests. Others walk or cycle along the cliff-tops and in the valleys, following paths that were created for Victorian-era honeymooners, or discovered by Aboriginal hunters many thousands of years ago. Over 140 km of walking tracks of all grades (some accessible for people with a disability) in diverse settings make the Blue Mountains a bushwalker's paradise.

This park, which is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, protects an unusually diverse range of vegetation communities. There are rare and ancient plants and isolated animal populations tucked away in its deep gorges.

The park covers 267,954 hectares, and the boundary of the park is quite irregular as it is broken up by roads, urban areas and inholdings. Collapse
