It was late 18th centrury when it was established in 1897. AGNSW is situated in the heart of Sydney Australia. The gallery is open to the public with free admission to the exhibition space featuring the Asian, European and Australian arts which begins from settlement to contemporary. The School of Arts in 1871 began to bring several huge works from the European countries like the Ford Madox Brown's Chaucer at the Court of Edward III. Later, some works from the artists of Australia was brought also like the McCubbin’s 1896 on the wallaby track, Roberts’ 1894 The Golden Fleece, and the Streeton’s 1891 Fire’s on. The Art Gallery displays the wonderful creations by most of the best Australian artists which includes the 19th century creations of artist s like George W. Lambert, Sydney Long, Frederick McCubbin, W. C. Piguenit, E. Phillips Fox, Charles Conder, David Davies, Tom Roberts, John Russell, Eugene von Guerard, Arthur Streeton and John Glover. It also includes Australian artist of the 20th century which represents Imants Tillers, Brett Whiteley, Fred Williams, John Olsen, Lloyd Rees, Arthur Boyd, James Gleeson, Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, William Dobell, Margaret Preston, Roland Wakelin, Grace Cossington Smith, , Rupert Bunny and Hugh Ramsay. The Art Gallery hosts the very prominent Australian Art Prize and Archibald Prize together with the Wynne Prize, Dobel Art Prize and Sulman Prize. The ART EXPRESS which is a once a year activity from New South Wales showcases the Higher School Certificate Visual Arts Examination artworks which is included in the exhibition of the Art Gallery of the New South Wales. Celebrating 2012 as the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, this exhibition showcases artworks that carry the dragon motif, either from the Gallery’s collection or on loan.
Encompassing bronzes, porcelains, textiles, paintings and calligraphy, it examines the creature’s diverse meanings and manifestations in Chinese art, ritual and politics, while pieces from Japan and Chinese exportware demonstrate how the dragon has been adopted by cultures outside China. Collapse
