Abbey's Bookshops owns 3 separate bookshops: Language Book Centre and Galaxy Bookshop and Abbey's Bookshop. Since 1968, the company has been an independent book dealer and has built a good reputation for carrying a wide range of books and other reading materials as they provide friendly and professional customer service at the same time.

Abbey's Bookshop opened in Sydney in 1968. It was owned by Ron and Eve Abbey and it was originally located at 115 Pitt Street. After one year, the book shop transferred to Sydney's famous Queen Victoria Building.

In 1983, the Queen Victoria Building was restored so they had to move to 66 King Street, where they had already opened two other stores named Penguin Bookshop (since 1977) and Oxford and Cambridge Bookshop (since 1978). Both bookshops focus on the books made by those publishers.

In 1986, all bookshops transferred to their current location at 131 York Street, just across the QVB and only a hundred meters from the Town Hall Railway Station.

Galaxy Bookshop specialises in Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror - was opened in 1975 at 106a Bathurst Street. After 10 years, they moved to a larger store located at 203b Castlereagh Street. In 1993, the shop moved to 222 Clarence Street, just behind Abbey's situated in York Street. In 2002, the shop had to move to 143 York Street, a few steps away from Abbey's. And in June of last year, Galaxy moved to the floor above Abbey's Bookshop, and they now share the space with Language Book Centre.

Language Book Centre was launched in 1976 and was originally located at 127 York Street. They moved in to the first floor of 131 York Street, above Abbey's in 1986.

In 1994, Ron Abbey retired from the book business. Eve Abbey, Jack Winning and Peter Milne remained as the company’s shareholders. Jack Winning and Peter Milne retired in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Since then Eve Abbey became the sole shareholder for Abbey’s, with her son Alan who works as the managing director and the shop manager and director, David Hall.

Established in 1968, Abbey's is Sydney's premier bookshop for history, science, philosophy, classics and other nonfiction areas, as well as a full selection of new fiction Australia's largest range of crime novels.
