A dance company founded in 1989, the Bangarra Dance Theatre is a company that respects, celebrates and embraces the indigenous culture of the people of Australia. Bangarra has come out as the only leading Indigenous theatre company in Australia which since 1991, has been led by the Artistic Director, Stephen Page.

Stephen Page has shared his remarkable signature masterpiece that has made the Bangarra Dance Theatre obtain their reputation as a sensational national and international dance company. Stephen Page is dedicated to improving of Indigenous storytellers of the next generation by teaching promising artists while they are under his artistic direction. Stephen Page, the Artistic Director was chosen as NSW Australian of the Year in 2008.

About 50,000 people watch the performances at Bangarra Dance Theatre every year and they are not only limited to people from Australia but from all over the world. Productions from Bangarra Dance Theatre are often sold out.

Bangarra’s performances are based on stories and traditions from the Aborigines and the Islanders of Torres Strait. The stories and traditions have produced a new language, a combination of old-fashioned style and the modern-day.

This distinctive, original and potent style shows stories of the Aborigines and the Islanders of Torres Strait, both the past and present. The Bangarra Dance Theatre marked their 20 years of performing their works of art in 2009. Banggarrra has also shared its influence all over the world as they go on tours around the world as well as perform on functions, art festivals and other special events.

Bangarra Dance Theatre was established in 1989 as a dance company that embraces, celebrates and respects Australia’s Indigenous peoples and their culture. Under the artistic direction of Stephen Page since 1991, Bangarra has emerged as Australia’s only national premier Indigenous performing arts company.

As Artistic Director, Stephen Page has developed an extraordinary signature body of work that has secured the company’s reputation as a national and international dance phenomenon. Stephen is also committed to developing the next generation of Indigenous storytellers by mentoring emerging artists. In 2008, Stephen was named NSW Australian of the Year.

Each year, Bangarra performs to approximately 50,000 people around Australia and the world and its productions are regularly sold out.

Bangarra bases its creative spirit on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions and stories producing a powerful new language that combines the traditional and the contemporary. This potent, original and distinctive style tells the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples unifying the past and the present.

In 2009, Bangarra Dance Theatre celebrated 20 years of bringing Australia and the world its original, evocative and inspirational dance theatre and eagerly anticipates the potential of the next 20 years.
