The new home for Sydney’s contemporary culture and arts is CarriageWorks. Introduced in January 2007, CarriageWorks was made out of a vision of a brilliant cultural life, a place for artists and people’s creativity and innovation. The theatre is a creative and inspiring atmosphere, a place where opportunity is given for artists to present, develop and conceive their talents and works of art. The multi-venue centre, best suited for small to medium arts sector, is a working hub for both its audiences and practitioners.

CarriageWorks presents and produces a multi-disciplinary program that is diverse and explores issues and ideas which are contemporary. It does this by working with artists from different communities and cultures, both local and international.

CarriageWorks is home to a number of Resident Organisations belonging to the contemporary arts which include Force Majeure, Erth, Performance Space, Reeldance, PlayWriting Australia, Stalker and version 1.0.

The old Eveleigh Rail Yards which was built between 1880 and 1889 is where Carriageworks is located. The NSW Ministry for the Arts bought the Carriage and Blacksmith Workshops located at site of the Eveleigh Rail Yards in June 2002 where CarriageWorks was soon constructed. CarriageWorks has then on been developed through Arts NSW by the NSW State Government.

CarriageWorks has a restaurant, the Johnandpeter Canteen which is available for reservation and also caters lunch and dinners. A bar with a wide selection of drinks, like beers, wine and spirits, is also accessible in the premises. Coffee and light snacks are served before and after shows.

Opened in January 2007, CarriageWorks is the new home for contemporary arts and culture in Sydney. Built on a vision of a vibrant cultural life for our people and artists, it’s a place for creativity and innovation, where artists are given the opportunity to conceive, develop and present their work in an inspiring and creative atmosphere.

CarriageWorks is housed in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards at Wilson Street, located within the emerging Redfern Waterloo precinct, and has been developed by the NSW State Government through Arts NSW. Starting with the cathedral-scale foyer, the physical beauty and scope of CarriageWorks is inspiring. The distinctive nineteenth century industrial atmosphere of the former railway carriage and blacksmith workshops have been retained, with many heritage iron and brick details featured in the regeneration of the building.
