The concept for Chapman & Bailey originated from a dream to provide a complete service to artists, and to the wider arts community. We started by combining our museum-grade stretchers with the finest linens sourced from Europe.
You could say Chapman & Bailey has grown organically, similar to the Arakaria Cunninghamis tree, from which we have taken much inspiration. Back in 2002, we led the industry by deciding to use hooped pine from this versatile tree to make our stretchers. Hooped pine Australia's first plantation grown timber indigenous to Queensland and northern NSW. It is both dense in construction, and its overall stability decreases movement of the timber.
We soon found there was a growing demand to provide further services such as custom art framing for artists, collectors, and galleries alike. Our joinery, which to this day is still run by practicing artists and craftspeople, then started to design bespoke furniture to utilize their creativity and utilize the resources of the workshop and our growing roster of clients.
This then created a need for sourcing the finest art materials from around the globe, and since our staff were using them on a regular basis anyway, we decided to open a retail store.
To complete the palette of art industry services, we now provide an artist-led gallery space, gallery installations, and the transportation of artwork around the country. And in April 2008, we opened our Brisbane outlet supplying art materials, framing and stretching.
At Chapman & Bailey, we find it is a joy to offer this unique service to people who have a real passion for the arts. In fact, a passion that is equal to ours.
