The Darlinghurst Theatre Company represents a diverse and powerful live theatre to its audience. Every production shows a new artistic and directorial vision, showcasing a unique dialogue and perspective about the human experience.

In 1999 the roof of the Darlinghurst Theatre Company was destroyed in a hailstorm that they have to change from their original location, at Kings Cross’ Wayside Theatre. The South Sydney Council provided them a new home at the Reginald Murphy Hall in the year 2000. A lot of the fittings from the previous theatre were saved and used the new theatre which include theatre lighting, theatre seats, dressing room mirrors and bar equipment even the original bar top. In 2001, a new Darlinghurst Theatre Company opened with the help of the Grosvenor Club, the NSW Ministry of the Arts and many individuals.

Glenn Terry, the Darlinghurst Theatre Director and designer Peter Vassallo transformed the Reginald Murphy Hall into a new theatre venue worked over a period of two years. Their collaboration created a unique and very desirable theatre space and made a functioning theatre environment with a dressing room, offices, foyer, terrace, bar and a big, open and modern-day stage.

The Darlinghurst Theatre Company has raised and helped more than 1,100 artists from Australia and has staged more than 120 shows since 2001. The theatre shows exceptional and new drama, brilliant and innovative musicals and a variety of spoken word theatre. The Darlinghurst Theatre Company works with remarkable artists and gives them a place where they can show their talents and skills.

We produce new Australian and new international plays and deliver a season of high quality, diverse and innovative theatre.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company works collaboratively with independent artists to produce and support work of their choice that they are deeply connected to.

Every year over 100 emerging artists stage some 16 different productions with the company.

The Darlinghurst Theatre Company was originally based at the Wayside Theatre in Kings Cross. The 1999 Sydney hailstorm destroyed its roof and the search for a new home began.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company very gratefully acknowledges the wonderful people, who participated during the building of the theatre.

Darlinghurst Theatre Director, Glenn Terry and designer Peter Vassallo worked closely over a period of two years to convert the Reginald Murphy Hall in Potts Point into the new Sydney theatre venue. Their cooperative effort led to the creation of a unique and highly sought-after theatre space and produced a working theatre environment complete with offices, dressing room, foyer, bar, terrace and a large, open and modern stage.
