Australia's longest running professional theatre company has got to be the Ensemble Theatre. The Ensemble Theatre has been running for more than 50 years and has never failed in maintaining theatrical presentation’s highest standards.

The Ensemble Theatre has its roots when a group of talented performance artists under Hayes Gordon, an American expatriate actor, came together to present in Cammeray Children's Library on May 11, 1958. The group was under the banner Variations on Similar Themes. The group was set to perform a selection of Tennessee Williams' works and on their invitation, one of the actors mentioned, ’’We haven't a name yet. Yes, we admit to training - Strasbergian, Stanislavskian, Meisnerian, Gordonian etc and we emphasise what might be referred to as the 'ensemble' values in production’’.

The group moved to where the theatre is now in 1960 which used to be an old boatshed at Careening Cove. Hayes Gordon, the founding Artistic Director chose Sandra Bates to take over his place on 1986. Sandra holds the position till this day and recently celebrated her 25th Anniversary with the company. The Ensemble Theatre is one of Australia’s most successful theatre companies. The theatre has persevered even through the uncertain economy and has the third largest subscription base in Australia.

The Ensemble has given over 350 productions since it was established. The company and has also performed at the Theatre Royal, Sydney Opera House, Playhouse, the Seymour Centre and has also gone on some tours both local and international.

The Ensemble Theatre has many of Australia’s favourite performers appeared on stage including the likes of Simon Burke, Lorraine Bayly, Michael Craig, Max Cullen, Russell Crowe, David Field, Nancye Hayes, Max Gillies, Reg Livermore, Todd McKenney, Garry McDonald, Amanda Muggleton, Georgie Parker, Caroline O’Connor, Marina Prior, William Zappa, Henri Szeps, Kate Raison, Jack Thompson and even international performers like Greta Scacchi and Warren Mitchell.

The Ensemble Theatre is idyllically located on Careening Cove offering superb harbour views. The auditorium is one of Sydney’s most intimate with 216 seats arranged in three blocks of seating around the stage. Come early and enjoy a drink and a snack in our foyer bar before the show or stay for a night cap after the performance.
