This sleek, skinny Victoria Street darling is all dressed up in red and white and has the groupies hooked. But she’s not just a pretty face – Fu Manchu’s food is as refreshing as her looks, dishing up a tasty assortment of Chinese delights every night of the week. There are many great Asian eateries lining Darlinghurst’s Victoria Street, but Fu Manchu is a real standout. With reasonable prices, super-friendly service and flavoursome fare, this restaurant has won a steady band of regulars. Guests perch atop the bright-red stools that line the slender communal table, rubbing elbows with fellow diners and sneaking a peek at what others are noshing. Recently opening for lunch Monday to Friday and with Annie Lee back at the helm, Fu Manchu is a must-try in the Darlinghurst dining strip.

Grab a few dining companions and order an assortment of dishes, starting with the steamed gow gee dumplings, stuffed with either pumpkin or seafood, for a delicious sneak preview to the main event. Chow down the kitchen’s spicy discs of eggplant and pumpkin dressed in chilli and salt – just make sure you have a few glasses of water on hand. The fried beef tenderloin fillet and nyonya chicken and potato curry are standouts, or try the Fu Manchu chilli noodles for another spicy kick. The restaurant is BYO and licensed, with four organic wines plus some Asian beers to choose from, or try the chrysanthemum and jasmine house tea for a soothing end to your meal. Fu Manchu boasts the use of free-range eggs, no MSG in its cooking, and tamari is also available. If there’s no space at the Fu Manchu dinner table, you can take your taste of Asia home; and if you bring your own takeaway containers, you’ll be rewarded with a 10% discount.
