Sydney's Central station will come alive with the sights and sounds of steam, as NSW's famous loco 3801 bows out in style, before heading home to the Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre for a major repair program.

Kids young and old can get a taste of steam excitement as 3801 puffs and whistles through the suburbs on a series of family steam train experiences departing from Central on Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11.

3801 will steam away from Central at 3.20 pm on Sunday, escorted by another vintage steam locomotive, 3526, on the parallel tracks through Sydney's inner west.

Built in 1943, 3801 is probably Australia's best known locomotive, delighting people all over NSW on its regular journeys taking heritage to the community.
