Turns out the folks that brought us Baffi & Mo, mustachioed cafe at the vanguard of the Redfern rush, also have green thumbs. Orto translates from Italian as â€˜kitchen gardenâ€™ and the new bright and airy space in Surry is decked with sprouting bottles, tin pails of potted herbs and garden tools that hang above the kitchen pass.
Though Italian by name, the menu digs up British classics too â€“ scotch eggs, a wellington and a trifle all appear on the bistro menu. As my accomplice noted, the wooden boards laden with feasts of slow roasted pork and duck have a touch of the medieval about them â€“ in a good way. Which is to say servings are generous; mains can easily feed two. Plus, youâ€™ll be given a cute little bucket of truffled popcorn while you wait for the â€˜main featureâ€™. The brief wine list trots global terroir, plus thereâ€™s a handful of appealing cocktails and a healthy selection of local beers.
This is the first eatery to get off the ground at the deNode apartment complex, with others under construction. These guys have once again got the lead on a block that will soon be buzzing. Not that they needed a head start.
